German Language Requirements for Ausbildung: B1 or B2?

The German level you need for an Ausbildung depends on who is asking. Immigration authorities set the legal floor, the chamber of commerce sets a recommendation, and the training company decides whether you can follow instructions on the shop floor or the ward from day one.

For the Ausbildung visa under § 16a AufenthG you must present a recognised B1 certificate from Goethe-Institut, telc, ÖSD or TestDaF. That is the minimum to enter Germany for vocational training, and it is checked at the appointment along with your signed training contract.

B1 gets you the visa, B2 gets you the job — most IHK and HWK chambers strongly recommend B2 because both your Berufsschule classes and your workplace run entirely in German.

What Each Level Means in Practice

At B1 you can follow a normal conversation, describe a problem and understand routine instructions. At B2 you can take part in a shift handover, read technical documentation and handle a resident or customer complaint without help. That gap is exactly why employers in nursing, hospitality and retail ask for B2.

Our courses run from A1 through B2 with Goethe and telc practice tests, and we schedule the exam so your certificate is ready before the employer interview rather than after it.

2. A2 to B1: a further 4 to 5 months, including exam training
3. B1 to B2: 4 to 6 months, depending on your practice hours
4. Total: most candidates reach B2 in 12 to 14 months

Which Trades Accept B1 and Which Need B2?

Accepted Certificates

Not every language certificate is treated equally. The German embassy and the chambers of commerce recognise the following providers:

• Goethe-Institut — the gold standard, accepted everywhere without question
• telc — widely accepted across all federal states and industries
• ÖSD — Austrian certificate, valid in Germany for visa and training applications
• TestDaF — primarily used for university admission, but also accepted for Ausbildung

Internal certificates from language schools, Duolingo results or self-assessments are never accepted for the visa process. Always confirm the accepted format with your specific embassy before booking an exam.

What Happens If You Only Have B1?

You can still apply and receive a visa with B1. Many training companies accept B1 candidates, especially in trades where hands-on work matters more than written communication. However, you should be aware of a few things:

• Berufsschule (vocational school) classes are taught entirely in German — B1 students often struggle in the first semester
• Written exams at the IHK or HWK are in German with no translation or extra time
• Some employers offer internal German courses during training, but this is not guaranteed

Our recommendation: start your application process at B1 to save time, but continue studying towards B2 in parallel. Arriving in Germany with B2 makes the first year significantly easier.
